Documentary Delights

Documentary can be one of the toughest genres to edit and it is an editor's storytelling expertise, sharp eye and inventive mind that can transform great footage into an even greater documentary.

Excellent documentary editors know how to balance the art and craft of storytelling with the tone and pacing demanded by different broadcasters.

With a roster of highly-experienced editors to draw from and an in-depth knowledge of the skills and style demanded by Directors, Producers and Broadcasters, Blueberry Creative Consultants assist returning clients in securing the best talent to collaborate with on great documentary programming. Over the summer months Blueberry's talented freelance editors have contributed to some ground-breaking (and even record-breaking) documentaries. We're happy to report on the excellent documentary craft demonstrated by Blueberry editors.

Blueberry editor Drago was hard at work earlier this month perfecting the edit for The Autistic Me - now the highest rated show in BBC3 history.

For BBC's Adult Season, Tami and Denis each edited an episode the controversial and intriguing series on the difficult decisions faced by teenage girls in the UK: My Big Decision.

Tom, St. John, and Kirsi were responsible for editing episodes of Channel 5's Big, Bigger, Biggest series, examining the greatest engineering achievements of our time. Blueberry talent was also called upon for finishing and online work for the series.

Giles completed editing on Meet the Natives a revolutionary experiment in 'reverse anthropology' where a small group of tribesmen from the South Pacific visit the USA to 'meet the natives'.

In July John worked on Inside Natures Giants editing together the dramatic footage of a whale being taken apart. John is continuing with large beasts as the editor of Pablo's Hippos - the story of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar's rogue herd of pet hippopotami - for BBC Storyville.

Blueberry talent has also had a hand in Channel 4's Daredevils series, and Afghan Girls Can Kick broadcast on BBC World and currently on the festival circuit.

Over the years Blueberry's editors have proven themselves as accomplished documentary storytellers. This proof is exemplified by the quality and profile of broadcast programming and film projects they are now called upon to edit. Don't be surprised if that great doc you saw last night passed through Blueberry's capable editors.

Congratulations to Firecracker Films, whose documentary ''The Autistic Me' is now the highest rated show in BBC3 history!

Shown on the 14th of August, the film was edited by Blueberry talent Drago Bajalica. The film follows the lives of three young autistic men on the cusp of adulthood. Their fight for independence and responsibility is illustrated in each of their stories as they deal with the challenges and frustrations of growing up in mainstream society.

'Big, Bigger, Biggest' Series 2 - Channel 5

Windfall Films latest series ‘Big Bigger Biggest’ is currently airing on Channel 5. These hour-long documentaries track the evolution of magnificent feats of engineering, from conception through to construction - brought to life with drama recon and CGI effects.

Blueberry has been working on the films since April, and our talents' hard work is certainly paying off! The episode Cargo Plane was The Guardian’s ‘Pick of the Day’, and The Telegraph has also sang the series' praises...

“This opening instalment of Big, Bigger, Biggest confirmed that [there's something interesting on the telly]. I mean, how did engineers manage to build a passage under the Thames, starting as early as 1825, without the river collapsing in on them? By studying the anatomy of a worm, that’s how.”

“Terrific animated diagrams”.

Catch future episodes ‘Space Stations’, ‘Ferris Wheel’, ‘Telescopes’ and ‘Cruise Liner’.

'Afghan Girls Can Kick' - BBC World

Blueberry is proud of the work that one of our editors Marta has recently completed on 'Afghan Girls Can Kick'.

This film is a remarkable story following the players of Afghanistan's national women's football team in the run up to a tournament in Islamabad.

The film follows a unique group of young women have come together, overcoming the stereotypes and a strict conservative society set forth by the Taliban. “Afghan Girls Can Kick” looks at the players individual circumstances and how they still live in danger and insecurity.
